How do you set your rates?

I give a project price so you and I know what the cost is up front.

What do you need from me?

Depending on the project I may need copies of past promotions, any research that will help with the project, and information on your customers if you have it. Also furnish a copy of your style sheet if you have one, or let me know if you use a standard style reference such as AP.

What about changes to the copy?

I will not charge extra for minor changes and will correct any mistakes I make for free. If you decide to change the scope of the project or make major changes after work has progressed or is completed, I will refigure the project price.

Why hire you when I can hire a copywriter on Elance or other bid site for $5.00?

Of course you can, but will you get a quality product? For a low price like that, the writer will likely type your document fast and give you an unedited first draft with uncorrected errors. Why take the time to correct, do research and figure out ways to improve the content if your writer isn't paid to do it right? If you want a typist to throw words on the page for $5.00 any hack can do it. But if you want a writer who targets your readers, writes to sell or inform, and creates messages prospects read; expect to pay more.

Who gets the copyright?

You get the copyright when you pay for the work. However, the writer retains the copyright for work not paid for and any free project done on spec.

I can get a writer in India to do it cheap, so why hire you?

Yes you can. Is he or she fluent in English and understands it like a native speaker? Does this person understand the differences between American English and British English? Most of us have read product instructions that read as if the Chinese translator used a Mandarin—English dictionary to write them. Do you want that?

Do you handle all aspects of the project including graphics, printing, distribution and web design?

No. I concentrate on what I do best, write. If I took on all aspects of the project I would charge you a surcharge above the sub-contractors’ fees, say 20%. If I contracted with a printer or other service I would need to charge you their fee up-front. You can make a better deal on your own. However, in some cases I may be able to recommend someone for other services.

What do I write?

I write technical documents, web content, brochures, ads, and other written media. I will not write spam, scams, illegal materials, tobacco promotions, or anything that violates my values.
